Artists Involved: Life of a Craphead, Joshua Barndt, Danielle Bessada, Geoffrey Pugen, Jeremy Bailey and Melissa Fisher

Melissa Fisher:

The stories behind the materials and objects Melissa Fisher uses in her installations will never be known to most of the people who view them. Such as, the group of pointed two by fours which were off-cuts from the floor built in XPACE for Life of a Craphead‘s movie set, and the dryer sheet embedded with kleenex taken from her grandparent’s laundry. Creating objects and environments that illustrate autobiographical happenings through personally significant materials can not be fully translated to the viewer by simply looking. A stack of mauve plastic cups may not necessarily convey their origin (taken from a dentist’s office during Fisher’s first visit in six years). However, the aesthetic ploys of colour, shape, pattern and polished assembly of the installation’s elements draw the viewer to it, like a personality, and regardless of whether the sporadic narratives are understood, some sort of engagement occurs. This engagement also roots itself in the nature of display windows, used to generate interest from the street and lure people inside, or simply facilitate window shopping. Naturally drawn to irregular exhibition spaces that expose art to a wide array of people, What Goes Around Comes Around serves as an excellent platform for the artist herself to be exposed to other artists’ processes of making. Rather than physically reacting to the space that each phase poses, Fisher will just be around, taking it in. Simultaneously integrating herself into the communal qualities of this exhibition and segregating herself by focusing on the durational installation of lately I’ve been wondering if you feel it too.

Art Spin crEATe

Art Spin is gearing up for its third season this summer. In preparation we are holdingcrEATe, a creative and interactive fundraising event, very much in keeping with the community minded spirit of Art Spin itself. crEATe is a communal dinner during which artists will have a chance to pitch their art project proposals. Dinner guests will vote on the project proposal they like best and the winner will receive the profits from that dinner to fund their project which in turn will be included in one of our Art Spin tours this summer. The winning project proposals may receive funding of up to $1000.

crEATe will be taking place on Wednesday, June 8th, at 7pm and will be hosted at Lula Lounge.

Art Spin would like to invite artists to submit their proposals for art projects. The goal of this fundraiser is to create a self-reliant arts funding strategy, whereby the arts community becomes more empowered to support itself.

Artists interested in pitching an art project proposal should make their submissions to: info@artspin.ca

Submission guidelines are as follows:

- Art Spin is a multi-disciplinary art event, therefore, this call is open to artists in all fields, be it visual arts (2-D, installation or new media) or performance arts. We are looking for creative, experimental, quirky and playful work - nothing is off limits!

- provide a one page cover letter describing your art project, and the amount of funds required. (in a Word .doc)

- one page CV and contact information (in Word .doc)

- if applicable, support material in the form of five to ten jpg or pdf images (no larger than 300kb each), or video files (i.e Quick Time, no longer than 5 minutes) pertaining to the specific project being proposed or images of past work that are representative of your practice. All support material must be compatible with both Mac and PC.

- if the project is site specific please provide details on where and how the project would take place. (please note that site specific projects in alternative spaces such as parks, laneways & abandoned spaces etc. are highly encouraged but should be contained to the west end of the city since all our tours depart from Trinity Bellwoods park).

- any time based performances should last no longer than 15 minutes.

- deadline for submissions: Monday May 23, 2011

- artists whose submissions are chosen to be pitched at crEATe will have 10 minutes to pitch their proposal. Audio and visual equipment (ie: computer, projector) will be provided.

- artists whose submissions are accepted will be required to pay the 45$ if they wish to join crEATe for dinner, if they wish only to present, the fee will b waived.

- artists whose submissions are accepted will be notified by May 27th.

- winning submissions will be included in one of our three Art Spin tours which will be taking place on:

June 30th, July 28th and August 25th

Tickets for crEATe (a three course communal dinner) are $45 so even if you're not interested in presenting a project proposal, we welcome you to join us in support of Art Spin and participating artists. The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach. Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today's pop culture. "Influencers" belongs to the new generation of webdocs, which combine the documentary style and the online experience.

Shot primarily from a helicopter, filmmaker Peter Mettler's "Petropolis: Aerial Perspectives on the Alberta Tar Sands" offers an unparalleled view of the world's largest industrial, capital and energy project.

Canada's tar sands are an oil reserve the size of England. Extracting the crude oil called bitumen from underneath unspoiled wilderness requires a massive industrialized effort with far-reaching impacts on the land, air, water, and climate.

It's an extraordinary spectacle, whose scope can only be understood from far above. In a hypnotic flight of image and sound, one machine's perspective upon the choreography of others, suggests a dehumanized world where petroleum's power is supreme.

Please join us for a unique cinematic experience at the Royal, Toronto (608 College St.) at the following times:

The Cryptic Canvas (TCC) Event Gallery is hosting a juried, indoor artists exhibition, ART off the Lot, November 5th - 8th. It is being independently run...needless to say it will be a lot more original, creative & fun! TCC is very much a gallery that acts in the interest of the artist. The show is only $500 for an indoor venue (which is half of all other indoor exhibitions) & we are not up-charging on extras (ie. walls, electricity, etc. Our cost is the artists cost). We also have a large portion of the budget dedicated to advertising.

The application deadline is SEPT 4th!
(don't worry the ap is not that complicated)

We rent out our 2000 sq. ft. space for $200 for the night (or $100 for members). We can also take care of picking up any supplies for your event, including liquor license and alcohol, we organize catering, bartend the event, setup and teardown the space, dj, project images or videos,..., basically pretty much everything you need to have a great show.

We'd love to hear ideas for your events and try our best to make things happen for you at AKIN.

Photo Studio Info

Hi there,

We finally took some photos of our photography studio (woah that's so meta...) but it's hard as all hell to take photos of a small room. Here goes though...
p.s. There's more info at the bottom of this post.

This is one of the members of Slow Club from the UK being shot by Pete Ohs from the US

Basically, to describe it, the space is 15'x15' with 14' ceilings. It is separated from our art studio by a massive curtain, which can be opened to allow photographers to shoot with longer lenses. We also have a loading dock into the studio which makes it easy to transport equipment in and out.

Our rates are:
$15/hr
$50/4hrs
$100/10hrs
Monthly memberships are $100/mth and then 50% of the rate for each use.

Please let us know if you'd like to book our studio, even on short notice.

Thanks for checking in with us. Here are some photos of the last event that took place at Akin. It was hosted by our friend Wynne Leung (http://wynneleungart.com) and was a great success. Basically it was a group of people coming together to collaborate and put their ideas together in the form of large muralish paintings and drawings. Just wanted to post up some pix from the show. I went today and it really was an overwhelming experience with so much incredible art everywhere. I loved it. Here we go:

Contact Photography Festival Show

AKIN Collective will be exhibiting unpublished photographic works by futurist architects Oliver Pauk and Zach Slootsky. Inspired by their research into unique evolutions of the scientific realm, the architects have envisioned a futuristic lightscape that reflects urban fragility on the precipice of technological revolution and possible demise.

Pieces will be showing at Akin from 1-6pm every day from May 3rd to May 16th.

No Flyers Please

AKIN has just started a new project called No Flyers Please. We're sick of cleaning up flyers that we never use but, that get dumped everyday on our doorsteps. So... we thought we'd get 12 000 static cling vinyl No Flyers flyers designed by our dear Nicole Tarasick and printed by our also dear Casey (both Akin members) at Lithocolor Services. These pieces of thin vinyl and their cardboard backings were themselves headed for the garbage can as they were excess material from another printing job, but Casey managed to salvage them. By the magic of static cling they stick to any flat surface... So we've started putting them in peoples' mailboxes around our city so that people can put them up and avoid having flyers dumped on their doorsteps too. Here are some examples:

Here is the design by Nicole Tarasick that's been printed on all 12 000 of our No Flyers Please clings.
