Consisting of Sumi ink on paper, Lilian Crum’s most recent body of work explores visual uncertainty through a psychological lens. Through intuition and restraint, ink is gradually pulled into loose, thread-like forms that are enigmatic and anthropomorphic. Although the images cannot be logically comprehended, they flicker with a quiet sense of familiarity that can be intuitively understood. The work has been refined through challenging form, material and meaning throughout ongoing exercises within the studio. Ultimately, Crum creates pieces that have the ability to be simultaneously quiet and monumental, and celebrate her unique quality of mark-making.
